The Rebel Snowspeeder

Part 1

The Rebel Snowspeeder by MPC/ERTL

First off I like to gather my information about the model I'm working on... in this case, I watched the movie ESB many times to get all the details I needed. I start off by painting each piece while on the sprue. I try to add as much detail as possible during this phase, because gluing is the easy step.

First off, I put together the figures and began with a flat black coating over each, and then dry brushed them to maintain the detail of the figurine. The hardest part was the helmets. First off I made a few sketches of the helmets... I decided to go with Luke's helmet first...

You can print these out for yourself if you wish. I made note of everything just to be careful that I didn't miss a thing. The second helmet (The Co-Pilot's) which everyone knows is Dax, I didn't like because it was too much like Luke's only in blue instead of red. So I decided to go with Wedge's co-pilot Jensen's helmet...

It had that cool pattern that just stood out and would be a challenge to reproduce. Once I had the helmet's done on each figure I really hated the "pouch" that they put on the front of this thing. It's bad enough the figure looks like a chimpanzee with arms long enough to scrap the ground and a tiny little body with stumpy legs, but the pouch is fairly noticeable, so I looked again and came up with a sketch of the breast plate with all the shiny knobs and things.

I cut this piece out of thin cardboard, and painted it up, and pasted it right over the "pouch" definitely made a difference! Once I had the figures down, I began work on the cockpit. I painted the interior dark gray with the detail on the inner walls a flat black. When it came to the instrumentation, I began by removing the entire surface of the front panels. The reason, they were completely wrong! I made another sketch from the movie of what the cockpit instruments actually looked like

Then I painted it on the surface I just removed. I think it looks alot better! However, after even more scrutiny of the movie, I was able to get even more detail then I ever did before and I came up with this little diagram in 3D to show it much more clearly:

Perhaps in my next Snowspeeder I'll figure out a way of making this cockpit ULTRA detailed as per this diagram instead seeing as it's much more accurate, but at least I got somewhat close. Hindsight is always 20/20!

Now, I put the whole thing together and it still missed something... the leather straps holding em in, so, I cut a piece of masking tape, painted it up, and stuck em into proper position. All in all, the cock pit is finished at this point. When I was happy with the cockpit, I started on the details of the side panels. I decided to go with the red paneling from the movie. Some were Dark Gray, and others had no markings at all. But I liked the red, so I stuck with it.
